Thiessen, Susie Sue July 8, 1923 - Schoenthal, Siberia June 30, 2019 - Calgary, Alberta Sue Thiessen, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away peacefully in the evening of June 30, 2019, surrounded by her loving family at age of 95. Born July 8, 1923 in Schoenthal, Russia, she was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Sara Plett; and siblings Peter (Elfrieda), Sara (Tom) and Jake (Marion); and her husband of forty-nine years, Peter Thiessen of Calgary, Alberta. Sue travelled from Russia to Montreal in 1929 with her family and settled in McAuley, Manitoba for several years. In 1937, they relocated to Gem, Alberta. After growing up on the prairies of western Canada, she eventually moved to Calgary where Peter proposed to her. Peter and Sue were married in Gem, AB and lived in Brooks before eventually moving and settling in Calgary to raise a family. Sue was an expert gardener and loved sharing the fruits (and vegetables) of her labor with family and friends. She loved tending to her flower beds and had a special fondness for the geraniums that always decorated the front entry of the home that was a welcome place to all who entered. She loved music and always prayed that it would be in the family. Along with Peter, she was highly involved in the church that they would attend for the remainder of their lives and was always willing to serve in any way she could. Sue's faith and commitment to serving God shaped and centered the way she treated others. She prayed continually for her family and loved ones. In the last week of her life, those that were able to be with her shared many moments of joy seeing her face light up when new visitors arrived to see her. She was a shining example of what it means to care for and love others selflessly. She will be deeply missed here on Earth but she is happy, healthy and waiting for us all to join her for a good meal and some peppermint cookies. Sue is survived by her four sons, Ken (Marti), Al (Melanie), Walt (Alison) and Art (Anita); sisters Mary, Tina, Anne, Olga and Martha; brothers Cornelius, George and Henry; and twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. All are welcome to join the family for a celebration of Sue's life at First Evangelical Free Church (732 55 Ave SW Calgary, AB) on Friday, July 5, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Southern Alberta Bible Cam (Box 99, Lomond, AB T0L 1G0.) In living memory of Sue Thiessen, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park. Published on July 3, 2019 in The Calgary Herald, AB
