Jean Gertrude Tucker 1926-2019 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Jean Gertrude Tucker, on June 26, 2019, at home in Kentville. Born and raised in Viewmount, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late George and Irene (Stensrud) Carter. Our mom recently celebrated her 93rd birthday and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She attended Mack Business College in Kentville and was then employed as a stenographer/bookkeeper for eight years with Manning Ells Ltd. of Port Williams. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Garvis Tucker, and they were married on October 1, 1951. After living near Halifax for a few years, they moved to Lower Burlington, Hants County, in 1962 and raised their family. Mom was a devoted and hardworking wife and mother whose family meant the world to her. She was also an active and faithful member of her church and supported community events. In 1987, Mom and Dad moved to Kentville and they enjoyed life in the Valley. When our Dad passed in 1997, Mom was devastated, but determined to remain in her home. For a time, she volunteered at the Aldershot Elementary School, helping the little ones learn to read - she loved that! She enjoyed trips around the province, and beyond, with her daughter. In 2003, she began attending the Salvation Army Kentville Community Church and participated in the Senior Ladies Bible Study and the Nifty Fifties groups. Mom loved to knit and made many beautiful items, including numerous baby sweater sets. In later years she kept her family and friends supplied with knitted dishcloths - a Christmas gift from Mom wasn't complete without two of her dishcloths, carefully rolled and tied with a ribbon. She was an avid reader, enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and looked forward to the weekly Lexicon in the paper. Mom was also a sports fan and enthusiastically cheered on her favorite teams. In her quiet way, Mom was courageous and strong, determined to keep going despite her health problems. Her faith in God remained true to the end. She was dearly loved and will be forever cherished in our hearts. She is survived by daughter, Barbara, Kentville; son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Kathy, Coldbrook; sisters-in-law, Florence Carter, Somerset; Gwen Tucker, Lower Burlington; Sonya Carter, Lincoln, NB and Audrey Carter, Victoria, BC; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband, Garvis; brothers, George, Francis and Gordon and sister, Mary. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2019 in The Salvation Army Kentville Community Church, 15 Nichols Avenue, Majors Ross and Doreen Grandy officiating. A private family burial will take place in the Centre Burlington Cemetery, Hants County. Donations in memory may be made to the Salvation Army Kentville Community Church, the Annapolis Valley VON, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. White Family Funeral Home, NS, 2019-06-30
