"On October 14, 1861, LaFlesh enlisted in the Union Army as a private, and his papers listed his residence as La Crosse, Wisconsin. In December of 1861, Company B of the 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry was created. The unit was mustered into service at Camp Washburn, near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on February 6, 1862, with a roster of 100 members. Thomas J. LaFlesh was named at the onset of this unit as Second Lieutenant. He received a promotion to 1st Lieutenant on August 6, 1862. When Tom LaFlesh was mustered out on November 15, 1865 in Austin, Texas; he had worked his way up to Captain of Company B, as he had received his promotion back on January 30, 1865.
He married Elizabeth Summerside, daughter of George and Mary Summerside, on August 27, 1863 at Black Earth, Wisconsin. He and Elizabeth, and their children Mary and WIlliam, lived in Clark Co. Wisconsin where Mr. LaFlesh was extensively engaged in the logging business in the 1870s and 1880s.
In 1889, Thomas LaFlesh and family left Wisconsin and moved to California where he pursued mining and road engineering. He died on September 21, 1905 in Portland, Oregon and was buried at Lone Fir Cemetery. His widow, Elizabeth filed for his pension on December 11, 1905, listing her California residence.
