Miller, Howard February 3, 1929 - Calgary, Alberta January 7, 2018 - Calgary, Alberta Howard passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at the Peter Lougheed hospital. Howard was born and raised on a farm in Calgary; the homestead is now a park in Charleswood. In grade one he rode his horse to school, in what is now one of the oldest buildings on the SAIT campus. He later moved to a house on Centre Avenue, located on the Bow River just west of the Centre Street Bridge. Howard learned to play percussion in the Navy Cadet band during the Second World War. Music was a centerpiece of Howard's life; he played in the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the King's Own Calgary Regiment Marching Band. Many hours were spent practising along with recordings of the Grenadier Guards playing marches and other military music. As a teen Howard worked for Smithbilt Hats. He eventually became a CMA, working in joint interest accounting for Texaco Canada and then Imperial Oil. Retiring over twenty years ago, he embarked on an ambitious program of world wide travel with his wife and best friend, Gladys. They travelled to Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Australia, Hawaii, Mexico, Russia, Norway, Denmark, Scotland, England, Belgium, France, Spain, Israel, and Egypt. They spent many years and much of their time in Western Europe tracing their family tree (s). Howard actually dreamed of becoming a jockey when he was young, as he was an excellent horseman. He was also an avid water skier, and enjoyed golfing, which he did mostly in Australia with Gladys. He identified with his father, who was born on the same day as Howard, in 1886. Unfortunately, Howard's father died unexpectedly when he was 15 years old. It can be said that the love (s) of his life were his grandchildren. His calmness, kindness and generous demeanour while around his grandkids was an identifying trademark of his later life. We shall miss Howard, and wish him well in his (after) life journey. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Gladys of 68 years; his sons Howard (Linda) and David (Debbie); daughter Joanne (Bob) and his grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Teresa. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church (835 Northmount Drive N. W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 - 325 Manning Rd. N.
