Lenz, James It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Ernest Jim Lenz on March 13, 2018 after a brief illness at the age of 93 years. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Bernice Lenz; his son Ron; daughter-in-law Arlone; as well as granddaughter Rebecca Nome and her husband Jarl Nome; granddaughter, Jennifer Worman and her partner Jamie Lawrence; grandson, Jamie Worman; as well as four great-grandsons, Spencer and Parker Nome, and Aiden and Liam Lawrence. Jim was predeceased by his wife Flora Merrill Lenz in 1971, and his daughter Laurie Karen Lenz in 2008. Jim's formative years were spent on the small family farm near Hillspring in the beautiful southwest corner of Alberta. Here he developed the attributes of love of family, honesty, hard work and dedication - qualities that would define him for the rest of his life. As well, the beautiful confluence of prairie and mountains in this lovely corner of the world nurtured a lifelong love of the outdoors. After graduating from high school in Hillspring, a brief stint in the army, and university at Queen's in Kingston, Jim returned to Calgary armed with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, soon landing a position with Shell Oil. However, by the early 1960's, looking for a more fulfilling career, he returned to school, earned an Education degree, and began his life's work as a teacher in the Calgary system. With his qualities of dedication and hard work, as well as attention to detail and fair mindedness, he soon became involved in school administration, becoming principal of Louis Riel Junior High in 1971. Jim retired in 1985. Retirement years were quiet but full. An avid golfer, Jim was a mainstay at Pinebrook with his golf buddies Doug, Don, and CB, as well as many others through the years. Other interests included reading, good music, gardening, and especially walking. A passionate sports fan, he was an enthusiastic follower of the Stampeders, Flames, and Blue Jays. A reserved, dignified man, Jim Lenz will be remembered for his kindness, honesty, perseverance, and generosity. He will be sadly missed and long remembered by family and friends alike. At Jim's request, there will be no public funeral. A small family gathering is planned for a later date. Donations may be made to, and gratefully received by, the Alberta Cancer Foundation, 200, 235 Manning Rd. NE, Calgary, AB., T2E 2P5. All in all a good life; quietly lived, but well lived.
