Kam, Bernard Philip August 22, 1937 - Braken, Saskatchewan March 31, 2019 - Calgary, Alberta Bernard Philip Kam, of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at the age of 81. He was surrounded by his family and his loving wife, Donalene (nee Cornelius), who was constantly at his side during his battle with cancer. Bernie had to leave home at sixteen to make his own way in this world. While working in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan as a surveyor, he spotted Donalene riding her bike. It was love at first sight. On June 25, 1960 Bernie and Donalene were married and made their way to Calgary where they raised their family. Bernie was a family man to the core. He loved his wife, kids, Barbara (Frank), Darren (Michele) and Sandra (Philip) and grandkids, Natalie and Thomas, unconditionally. He was a kid at heart and his curiosity kept him young. Known to many as Bernie Kam the Plumber Man, he ran his own business, Premium Plumbing, for decades. When Bernie did any job, he did it right. His health forced him to retire early and he changed roles to become a staunch environmentalist (a. k. a. bottle-picker) while getting his daily Fitbit-dictated ten thousand steps. Bernie and his family travelled extensively. He had many talents, but mashing potatoes was not one of them. Bernie enjoyed nights at the casino with Donalene, bowling, darts, fishing and weekly brunch with his friends. Throughout his life, he took great joy in attending his children's and grandchildren's activities. He especially liked driving them, where he held them captive in the car and could have a good conversation. Bernie was born to Wendell and Gertrude Kam, in Bracken, Saskatchewan on August 22, 1937. Besides his adoring wife, children and grandchildren, Bernie is also survived by siblings, Joseph, Vivian Nearing, Arlene (Phil) Caron, Rosemarie (Gary) Huber, Edward (Sharon), Bob (Cindy) and Dolores (Randy) Kinnell; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and in-laws Fabian Nearing and Helen Kam. A Celebration of Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Eastside, 5388 Memorial Drive NE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, April 5, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
