Jim Shigeki Akizuki March 8, 1936 - February 25, 2018 Akizuki, Jim (Shigeki) Our cherished Jim (Shigeki) Akizuki died peacefully on a bright and sunny afternoon, Sunday February 25th 2018, surrounded by the love of his family. Born March 8th, 1936 in Steveston, BC, Jim grew up mainly in Lethbridge where his family was interned during the war. In 1950 the family returned to Steveston. Jim attended Richmond High Secondary, graduating in 1954. As a young man, Jim worked at the Namu fishing cannery up the coast along the Inside Passage. He returned to Steveston in 1959, fixing vehicles and fishing boat engines at the famous Marine Garage on Moncton Street. During this time he began courting Jean (Michiko) Miki, who he married in September 1962; they enjoyed over 57 years together including over 55 years of marriage and raising Jayne and Lisa. Jim worked for 29 years for Tree Island Industries as Purchasing Manager, where he made many lifelong friends. He was proud to say that most of his business deals were handshake agreements. He was honest, loyal, and trustworthy in business. In all aspects of his life, Jim was kind, generous, patient, giving, and loving; always thinking of others first. Jim greeted everyone as a friend and a good person. As a result, he was well loved and respected wherever he went. Always fun-loving, Jim enjoyed golf, fishing, travelling, trying new recipes, restaurants, going for drives, walks and movies with Jean, and especially any time that involved having the family together. His special love for granddaughter Rebecca was evident by the countless hours he and Jean devoted to babysitting, attending soccer games, piano recitals and school events, and talking about her with pride over the years. Predeceased by parents (Sukenobu and Takeyo), sister (Katherine), brothers Satoru, Sam and Tom; nephew Lindsay. Remembered with love by his immediate family: Jean, Jayne (Tim), Lisa (Kevin), beloved granddaughter Rebecca, and the dogs Kobe and Lucy. Also remembered by extended family members including Al (Pat), Lillian (Jim), Bob (Rosemary); in-laws Kinuyo, Eiko and Hiro; nephews and nieces and their children, and numerous good friends accumulated during a life well lived. We wish to thank the following for many happy times: The Boy's Lunch Group, The Rice Trail Guys, Nick Ciolfitto, Luc Morin and Bob Bro Billan. Special mention to Moe Yesaki and Grace Hodgson who will continue the monthly tradition of movie and Chinese food with Jean. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers of the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner. No flowers or koden by request. Those wishing to remember Jim with a donation may give to the Irene Thomas Hospice, BC Cancer Agency, or a charity of their choice. A celebration of life will be held later this year to share memories of Jim; date to be announced. Goodbye Jichan, we love you. Published in Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Mar. 16, 2018
