Von Dehn, W. Arne May 25, 1938 - March 13, 2018 Arne left us peacefully after living with a lengthy illness. We now cry for a man who was always a shining light in our lives. Arne was born on May 25, 1938, in Narva, Estonia into a family with high moral values of loyalty and integrity. This was the foundation for his truly genuine nature. World War II forced their family to make difficult decisions to leave their home and their country for the possibility of a better life. This caused the family to be separated with Arne's parents and sisters staying behind. Following his siblings to Canada in 1956, he finished high school in Vancouver and went on to UBC where he finished his degree in Political Science. He began his law degree at Kings College in London. During that time, on a trip home to Germany, he was smitten with a beautiful young woman named Marie-Thérèse von Sivers. He knew she was the love of his life, and asked her to marry him within three days. They were married the following year in Munich and then, leaving everything they knew behind, they started an adventure into the unknown with only their VW bug to transport them. Driving the vastness of Canada they came to Vancouver where he finished his law degree at UBC. While Marie-Thérèse worked as a physiotherapist, Arne pursued his career as a very successful lawyer. Building his own firm, he rapidly established a flourishing law practice encompassing a large international clientele. The responsibility towards his clients allowed him to have an intimate relationship with them and in a sense, they felt taken care of. It is this dedication that provided the foundation for his success. The richness of his life was further enhanced by the birth of his four children. Nicolas, Corinne, Stefan, and Kristina. Arne always had an incredible ability to balance the intensity of his law practice with his highly energetic family life. Both Arne and Marie-Thérèse provided the children with many family trips, camping, skiing and traveling. He was the driving force behind filling the house with family and friends, holding get-togethers, dinner parties, graduations, and weddings. His contagious laughter was heard everywhere and was an attraction to all he met. With the birth of their eight grandchildren, Arne and Marie-Thérèse found a new dimension to their already full and blessed life. We will miss this incredible man. He has had such an impact on all the people he has met, even those he encountered only briefly. We all wish we could live a life with such integrity, honour and humour. His example will be his legacy and those values will live on through his children and grandchildren. Arne is survived by his wife of 54 years Marie-Thérèse; his children, Nicolas (Tracey), Corinne (Percy), Stefan (Fumie), Kristina (Mitch); his grandchildren, Kai, Alexander, Felix, Sophie, Neve, Sterling, Finley, Lucy; his sisters Andrea von Oppen and Anita von Pistohlkors. A service will be held on Saturday, March 24 at 3 p.m. at St. Mark's Parish at 5935 Iona Drive (UBC). A reception to follow. Parking is available across the street at the Carey Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Arne's name to Covenant House Vancouver or the charity of your choice.
