Cumming, Margaret (nee Moyston) Born November 15, 1941, St. Catherine Parish, Jamaica to Asher and Iris Moyston (nee Facey) and died January 8, 2018, Ottawa, Ontario, Margaret was a registered nurse-midwife, public health nurse, public servant, volunteer and leader in many organizations. She is mourned by her beloved husband, Lawrence Cumming, daughter, Dr. Vanessa Cumming (Damian Phang, husband), son Kevin Giles Cumming (Holly Graven, friend) and granddaughter, Sari Phang. Margaret will be sadly missed by her wider family, broad circle of friends, colleagues and neighbours whose many lives she touched. Trained in Birmingham, U. K. In the early 1960s, she nursed in England, Uganda, and Canada (Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick). Margaret trained nurses at the University of New Brunswick and the University of Ottawa prior to pursuing graduate studies in health policy and joining the federal public service in 1985. She occupied several positions at Health Canada as well as Research Coordinator in the Royal Commission on New Reproductive Health Technologies (1991-93). In the years leading up to her retirement in 2007, she served in Health Canada's Northern Secretariat with responsibility for health services in the Yukon, Nunavut and North West Territories. She served a wide variety of church and community volunteer organizations, from assisting students with remedial reading support, through volunteering at musical events to coordinating volunteers and cooking at Out of the Cold Suppers. At the time of her death she was Chairperson of her church congregational council. In the course of her work, Margaret travelled widely throughout the country and represented Canada abroad on many occasions. She also enjoyed personal travel with Lawrence and other family members, most recently to Ireland in September. Special thanks go to the physicians, surgeons, nurses, other health care workers and support staff at the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus for their extraordinary efforts and tender care in recent weeks. A celebration of Margaret's life will take place at Southminster United Church, 15 Aylmer Ave. at Bank St., Ottawa, 1100 a.m. (visitation begins at 0930), Saturday, January 13 with a reception to follow.
