I'm wondering if others with more experience with Québec genealogy research might have some insight.

Are there known blank spots or lost records not to be found in the PRDH and LAFRANCE? I did go through the other search tools here on Généalogie Québec without any luck.

In the PRDH and LAFRANCE I find baptism and marriage information for an individual. I find baptisms for some of his children. I find the remarriage of his widowed wife and his wife's death.

But I find no death record for this male subject which should exist sometime prior to his wife's remarriage.

I also find evidence later in another part of Canada that this same individual prior to his death had more children with his wife than are found in the PRDH and LAFRANCE.

This specifics are as follows:

PRDH Family # 87079

Jean Baptiste Paquet & Marie Anne Thibault

Married: 1782-07-29

Children in the PRDH:

Marie Louise b. 1783-11-02 d. 1790-02-14

Luc 1786-03-13

Benjamin 1789-08-23

Marie Anne Thibault married a second time to Joseph Morand 1804-08-20. Please see PRDH individual #225479 for expanded information on Marie Anne Thibault if needed.

This marriage date in 1804 points to her first husband Jean Baptiste Paquet's death happening sometime prior to this marriage. But there is no record of death/burial to be found.

The date of his death is key to resolving other questions about the family so it is worth pursuing.

The original marriage record for Marie Anne Thibault to Joseph Morand at Montréal (Notre-Dame-de-Montréal) in 1804 only offers that her deceased husband Jean Baptiste Paquet was of the same parish: Montréal (Notre-Dame-de-Montréal).

I'm not sure how to interpret this. They knew he was dead. They identified him as belonging to that parish. Yet there's no record of his death anywhere.

There is circumstantial evidence found much later in Upper Canada and other places that Jean Baptiste Paquet and Marie Anne Thibault had at least two other children which I also cannot locate in the PRDH or LAFRANCE:

François Paquet and Marie Paquet. Both would have been born between about 1790-1800.

Jean Baptiste Paquet's son Luc Paquet anglicized his name to Luke Perkins in Upper Canada, and so did these other two likely siblings: François became Francis Perkins and Marie became Mary Perkins.

Luke Perkins married Alma Spencer, daughter of Daniel Hill Spencer.

Mary Perkins (Paquet) married Daniel Hill Spencer Jr.

There is further circumstantial evidence in Upper Canada that Luke Perkins (Luc Paquet) may have had two other siblings: Dorothee and Israel. I'll spare the details on these two for now.

Thank you for your patience in looking this over. We'll be grateful for any suggestions or recommendations.
For different reasons, people moved around. Obviously, JB Paquet and Marie Anne Louise Thibault migrated to Upper Canada and had children there. The PRDH and the Lafrance cover Quebec, not Upper Canada; thus the birth of the children born there and most certainly, the burial of Jean Baptiste are not in our data base. Marie Anne Louise Thibault came back to Quebec after the death of her husband and married Joseph Morand...

You have to search for JB Pauqtte's burial record in Upper Canada where the couple migrated...

you have on family search ( free)
1. Ontario catholic parishes.
2. Ontario death records (for Israël and Dorothee) after 1869 . The birthplace is generally mentioned

3. find a grave - Canadian headstones
4.Wills and Probate papers.
5. Mcgill Uni. Map of Upper Canada settlements ( with names)

No. Perhaps I worded things in a such a way that it was confusing. I do understand what Lafrance and PRDH cover. To clarify:

JB Paquet and Marie Anne Thibault were never in Upper Canada. So it's not the place to look for them. To clarify: some of their children were in Upper Canada as of about 1819 after both JB Paquet and Marie Anne Thibault were dead. Joseph Morand widower of Marie Anne Thibault stayed in Quebec and married a 3rd time. The children of JB Paquet and Marie Anne Thibault migrated as young adults with other intermarrying families to New York and Upper Canada.

I have been researching families of JB Paquet and Marie Anne Thibault in Upper Canada for a long time. Records in Upper Canada for these years are very scarce and sporadic. Nothing like the French Catholic rules for birth, marriage, death records existed in that part of Canada until about Confederation. I and other researchers have uncovered about all we are going to find there for these families - unless by luck something shows up in somebody's peripheral research.

It is possible that JB Paquet and Marie Anne Thibault lived somewhere other than Quebec, but I believe it would have to be one of the bordering American states or perhaps somewhere in then Lower Canada where records may have been lost or perhaps not made at all.

Hi Marcotte_S, please see my reply to desjadb on this thread.

Thank you both for your replies to my post, by the way!

I am aware of all these resources and more. I've checked them thoroughly over the past 5 years. No dice, but thanks for the suggestions. I've worked in concert with other researchers of these families - some who luckily had direct access to Archives Canada and Ontario Archives.

It's just a very tough research problem and the records for death just don't exist in their location during this time.

Israël died about 1829-1830. Dorothee died between 1857-1860. We only know this from the remarriages and approximate birth dates of children with new spouses. Best we can do because birth, marriage, deaths were not preserved for these people in Johnstown District. What did survive is sporadic and has almost no information for these families at all. Just to be clear: these two children are at best hypothetical children of JB Paquet and Marie Anne Thibault until we can find more. One of the reasons learning something more specific about JB Paquet's date and place of death is so important.

But there were others: Francois and Marie who are almost certainly children of JB Paquet and Marie Anne Thibault though they aren't found in PRDH.

I don't want to get into all the hairy details, or test the patience of readers here so I'll leave it at that for now. I will let you all know what I eventually find out if anything. I don't like to give up.

Thank you.

Your chance could be gardianship ( for minors) after the death of one of the parents.
It is really easy for Québec (city), wich has an index ( by name) and thé judgements ( by date). family search
For Montréal you have (on family search) the court judgements of gardianship ... by date (but, without index!).
* Did you search for an "inventaire des biens après décès" (notarial document). You can see BAnQ : "instruments de recherche en ligne", "inventaire après décès " for Montreal).
The date of the "inventaire après décès" is closed of the gardianship judgement (Superior Court).
*
If you never used "gardianship files" ; i suggest you, to try with the gardianship files of Québec city , take à name ( a parent died, with minor child(ren) or the names on an "inventaire" and (1) search in thé index the name of the father, to find the date. (2) with the date, search in the judgements file..

The other difficilty is thé first name of your Paquet, " Jean Baptiste" is the most common first name ...

If you can't find an "inventaire" (and the date) ask "Centre d'Archives de Montréal" if they have, near 1800, an Index of gardianship, with your jb paquet.
You can do the same thing, for his wife (with the name of her 2d spouse).

Also, censuses of 1852 and 1861 mentioned (often) the birthplace
You have, only on the census of 1891, the birthplace of the parents (that could be interesting for Dorothee). You have all the canadian censuses on bac-lac .

No, sorry

You have : https://www.banq.qc.ca/a...;3=&4=&5=&6=
For 1891-1807 : it is Lucky, for this family ... but ...
*
The index/ guardianship / Montréal
I can't see "Luc" or "Benjamin" as 《pupille》, nor "Israel" and "Dorothee".
*

Try for a family "pattern" very different.
JB left her wife and had illegitimate children (Israel and Dorothee), in Upper Canada.

Do you have his occupation ?
possibility : "voyageur" (furs trade)

*
(not here :
HBC : https://www.gov.mb.ca/ch.../biographical/index.html
NWC : https://www.gov.mb.ca/ch..._servants_contracts.html )
*
"Marie Louise b. 1783-11-02 d. 1790-02-14"
Was the father present at her burial ?

Do you have a marriage for Dorothée ? for Israël ?
