About the Mayer surname
The surname Mayer has a primarily toponymic formation. The surname form is consistent with German naming traditions, in which occupations, places, and personal names are common sources. The surname may therefore originally have identified a person by place of origin, residence, or a feature of the landscape. Families bearing the same surname may nevertheless come from different places when more than one locality produced a similar name.
