Charlton, Valerie May May 15, 1939 - Whangarei, New Zealand February 22, 2018 - Calgary, Alberta It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Val Charlton in Calgary on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the age of 78 years. Born in Whangarei, New Zealand (NZ), Val was the oldest of three sisters - the great granddaughters of Maori Princess Te Aorere. Growing up she enjoyed sports of all kinds and was an avid swimmer and a competitive tennis player. Val was the youngest graduate of the Ardmore Teachers Training College, NZ. She went on to teach elementary school in Okaihau, Opunake and Whangarei, NZ, as well as in Australia where she first met her future husband, Ken, in Kings Cross, Sydney. Val traveled from Australia to Canada in 1965 and worked as a teacher in Chilliwack, British Columbia, where she reunited with Ken who proposed in 1967. Val and Ken moved to Calgary, were married in Banff on July 20, 1968, and welcomed their daughter Kate into their family on July 20, 1973. Val enjoyed a lengthy career teaching for the Calgary Board of Education. She was also an avid reader, a sports enthusiast, and an active member of the Lynx Ridge Golf Club. She was a devoted wife and mother to both Ken and Kate, whom she cared for deeply. Val and Ken traveled extensively around the world; one particularly special trip was to Sydney, Australia in 2014 for her daughter Kate's PhD graduation. Val is survived by her loving husband of fifty years, Kenneth (Ken); by her daughter Kathryn (Kate) (San Francisco); and by her two sisters Alma Townson (Australia), and Joy Prescott (New Zealand). Val was predeceased by her parents, James (Jim) and Alma (Kit) Wilson (New Zealand).
