Melnyk, William (Bill) Anthony May 11, 1935 - Willingdon, Alberta February 22, 2018 - Calgary, Alberta It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, William A. (Bill) Melnyk, on February 22, 2018 after a long illness. Born on a farm in the Pruth area of Alberta on May 11, 1935 to Ukrainian parents, Bill spoke Ukrainian and Romanian but very little English until he went to school. He attended multiple grade schools until high school where he graduated from Willingdon High School in 1954. Bill loved all sports and excelled in baseball. Playing for Willingdon High as pitcher, the team won the baseball championship from 1951 through 1954. Bill enrolled in the Emergency Teacher Training Program at the University of Alberta in the summer of 1954 and started teaching in a multi grade school north of Lac La Biche with only six weeks of training. With his earnings from teaching he bought his first car, a 1955 Chevy. In November 1955 at the teachers convention in Fairview, AB, Bill met Felicia Leew and it was love at first sight. Bill proposed to Felicia at his 21st birthday party, and she took about an hour to say, Yes. They were married December 26, 1956 at the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer in Calgary and then had a Ukrainian dinner and dance three days later in Willingdon, hosted by Bill's mom and dad. Living in Edmonton, Felicia continued teaching but Bill began a career in the steel and pipe industry. Their daughter, Chris, was born in November of 1957, with Stephanie to follow in April 1959. Bill was hired by Anthes Imperial after his mother-in-law, Evelyn, saw an ad in the Calgary Herald and contacted the company manager to set up an interview. The family moved back to Calgary where Bill fit in well with the Anthes organization. Bill's third daughter, Talie, was born in November 1960. In 1971, Bill and Felicia graduated together with Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Calgary. In 1973, the family moved back to Edmonton where Bill began working in sales with Titan Foundry. In 1976, Bill opened a new company, Trojan Industrial Distributors, in Calgary. Felicia, by this time, worked for the Alberta Teachers Association. Both retired from those respective organizations. Bill and Felicia took many memorable trips over the years and stepped on every continent except Antarctica. Married for close to fifty-nine years, Bill lost Felicia on October 1, 2015 and never truly recovered from her passing. Together with her again, their love shines on, and Bill will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends. Celebration of Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery. Reception to follow at the funeral home. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Agapé Hospice, 1302 - 8 Avenue N. W., Calgary, AB T2N 1B8 Telephone: (403) 282-6588. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Bill Melnyk, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
