Lounsbury, Kathleen Marie June 24, 1924 - Beausejour, Manitoba February 22, 2018 - Calgary, Alberta Kathleen Marie Stephens was born June 24, 1924, in Beausejour, Manitoba, the elder child and only daughter of Charles Bertram Stephens and Rowena Kinney Stephens. Her parents were schoolteachers; her father had served in the trenches during the First World War. The young family moved often and settled in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. The Depression years were grim. At 17, Marie moved to Kindersley, Saskatchewan, where she took up her first job, as a teller in a bank. In spring 1945 she was married to Donald Hall Lounsbury, to whom she bore two children. A few months after graduating from high school and having, like her mother, taken a position as a teller in a bank, her daughter Janis died at 18 in a car accident. From this early death neither parent ever fully recovered. When her daughter started school, Marie joined the staff at Air Canada in Calgary, where she worked the telephones and in the ticket office and remained until retirement, collecting tales of obstreperous passengers. Because her husband had retired early, on account of vision difficulties, the couple were able to travel frequently, often with friends, to many places, from Alaska to the Cape of Good Hope, throughout Western Europe and North America. While at home, Marie served as treasurer to Bow Cliff Seniors for many years. Of her immediate family she was predeceased by her daughter, her brother, her husband (in 2008), her husband's brother, a niece, and her two sisters-in-law. Her son, Richard, survives her. Marie grew to adulthood when it was rare for girls from the Prairies to attend university. Excluded from that opportunity, she did not complain. Her experience in a bank was useful both in and out of the workplace. She was by nature efficient, provident, and even-tempered, neither mean nor extravagant, always supportive of her children's projects and ambitions. Friends are invited to celebrate her memory, and to sign a book of condolence, at the vigil being held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Marie Lounsbury, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
