Altshuller, Bernard - On Tuesday February 27, 2018, after a short, but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, Bernie Altshuller passed away peacefully with his wife and sons by his side. Beloved husband of Elaine. Loving father and father-in-law of David Altshuller and Rebecca Cash, and Marc Altshuller. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Joe and Grace Altshuller, and Ann and the late Peter Shour. Proud and devoted Zaidy of Maya, Ezra, and Zev. Born in Montreal, Quebec in March 1939 to parents Phillip and Dora Altshuller. Bernie graduated from McGill University with a B. Eng. and M. Eng. He was a metallurgical engineer who worked for Alcan throughout his entire career first in Shawinigan Quebec and afterward in his adopted and beloved hometown of Kingston, Ontario. Among his many accomplishments combined with worldwide travel, Bernie pioneered robotic-arm arc welding, co-invented a process for aluminum composite coatings to protect metal structures, participated in early innovations that later facilitated the widespread use of aluminum car parts and spear-headed funding for and advised the first Queen's University Solar Vehicle Team. Outside of work, Bernie was a long-time and passionate supporter of Save the Children Canada and in 2012 he received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his work with the organization. For two years he served as President of Beth Israel Synagogue where over the years he also served in other capacities including Youth Chairman, Treasurer and Chair of the Trust Committee. Special thanks to his nurses and caregivers Joane, May, Jeanet, Tess and Emily who never left his side; the doctors and nurses at Princess Margaret Hospital and Toronto General Hospital; and the doctors, nurses and staff at the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care. The funeral for Bernie will be held at Benjamin's Park Memorial Chapel, 2401 Steeles Avenue West (3 lights west of Dufferin) on Sunday March 4, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place in the Community section of Pardes Chaim Cemetery.
