Walter O. Spitzer M. D., M. P. H., F. R. C. P. C. 1937 - 2006 With great sadness, we announce the passing of Walter O. Spitzer on April 27, 2006. Following complications resulting from a recent car accident, he died peacefully at Saint Mary's of the Lake Hospital in Kingston with his family by his side, and is now with his Lord. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Carmen, his children, Paul, Pamela, Carl, Brenda, Marco, Sonia and Claus, their spouses, ten cherished grandchildren, his sister Ruth Matisko, her husband Barnard and their children Michael and Ann. Born in Asuncion, Paraguay, February 19, 1937, eldest son of Paul Rosenberg and Elsa Spitzer, Baptist missionaries among the Guarani people in Paraguay. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an epidemiologist and educator: Associate Professor at McMaster University; Strathcona Professor, Chairman of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Professor Emeritus, McGill University; General Director of the International Christian Medical Society; Clinical Professor of Medicine, Stanford University; Editor of the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology; Member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academics, Washington, D. C.; National Health Scientist of Canada; author of over 100 books and original articles. Avid flyer, sailor, pianist, brilliant linguist and humourist. Special thanks are extended to the nurses, physicians and staff at Saint Mary's of the Lake Hospital who cared for him with warmth, humour and professionalism. Funeral services will be held at St. Peter's Anglican Church, 4333 Bath Road, Kingston, Ontario on Tuesday, May 2nd at 1:00 p.m., reception to follow.
